Froch seeks out Calzaghe after Taylor win

Froch lands another punch in round 12 against Taylor

Carl Froch sensationally defeated Jermain Taylor with a last gasp flurry to retain his World Boxing Council (WBC) super-middleweight title on Sunday morning. ‘The Cobra’ immediately targeted boxing great Joe Calzaghe after the win in Connecticut.

“I’m ready for anyone, even Joe Calzaghe if he can be bothered getting out of his armchair” said a jubilant Froch.

The result of the fight looked to be going the other way up until the last two rounds. Only Froch’s self-belief kept him in a contest in which the odds were heavily stacked against him: away from home and (as he admitted later) jet-lagged; underrated and unknown in the United States; outpointed for most of the first eight rounds; down on the canvas for the first time in his career.

Taylor dominated the early rounds and Froch was behind on two of the three judges’ scorecards going into the final round. However a dramatic final 3 minutes ensured the Nottingham boxers unbeaten record remained in tact in the most dramatic of circumstances.

Promoter Mick Hennessy doubs whether Calzaghe would want to fight Froch, after witnessing his fighter extend his winning run to 25 fights.

“Carl made a big statement. There are endless options now, including Joe Calzaghe if he fancies it. He won’t want any part of Carl after seeing what he did to Taylor.”
