Friday Fun – Iain Dowie

"I'm not making it up, you spell it with two i's!"

"I'm not making it up, you spell it with two i's!"

The name Iain Dowie conjures a plethora of footballing images. Some great and some not so. In his heyday, Dowie was a ruggered in your face kind of centre forward for West Ham.

The former Northern Ireland international played for the Hammers, Southampton and QPR in a playing career which spanned 18 years.

Although Dowie has sampled a degree of success in management, it is as a player that he gave many football fans the most joy. Unless you’re a West Ham fan the culmination of that joy occurred on the 18th of December 1996 when Dowie scored what has to be described as the greatest own goal EVER against Stockport County in the 4th round of the League Cup.

As you can see from the footage below Dowie escaped his marker impeccably to fire a well taken header into the back of the net. Problem being it was down the wrong end…
