Having stuck put 4 past both England and Argentina en-route to reaching the World Cup semi-final, many pundits and so-called experts were expecting the Germans to sweep aside Spain and reach the final.
However, Paul the psychic octopus knew better and correctly predicted a Spain victory over Germany. Paul, who was actually born in Weymouth and now lives a happy life in the Sea Life Aquarium in Oberhausen in Germany, chose a mussel from a jar with a Spanish flag on it instead of one with a German flag.
The ‘World Cup Oracle’, as he is known by his supporters, also correctly predicted Germany’s previous 5 games in South Africa, including the surprise loss to Serbia in the group stages.
Paul is no stranger to predicting Germany’s football results and impressively picked the winner in 70% of his team’s games at the Euro 2008 Championships.
So what does the future hold for Paul? A place next to Alan Hansen and Alan Shearer on the couch for Match of the Day? Probably not, but his 100% accurate predictions at the World Cup have already made him a household name in Germany.
