Sir Bobby Robson sadly passed away at the age of 76 earlier today as he lost his long fight against cancer.
Robson, who managed some of Europe’s leading clubs including Barcelona, PSV Eindhoven, Sporting Lisbon and FC Porto, as well taking charge of English sides Ipswich and Newcastle, had a brilliant way with words.
We remember his most memorable quotes below.
“If we start counting our chickens before they hatch, they won’t lay any eggs in the basket.” Discussing the importance of chickens.
“We’ve got great speed in the team, not just Gary Speed, but great speed!” On pace.
“I would have given my right arm to be a pianist.” On learning a musical instrument.
“What can I say about Peter Shilton? Peter Shilton is Peter Shilton, and he has been Peter Shilton since the year dot.” On Peter Shilton.
“When Gazza was dribbling, he used to go through a minefield with his arm, a bit like you go through a supermarket.” On Paul Gascoigne
“He’s the only man I know who could start an argument with himself.” On Craig Bellamy.
“All right, Craig Bellamy came on at Liverpool and did well, but everybody thinks that he’s the saviour, he’s Jesus Christ. He’s not Jesus Christ.” On Craig Bellamy.
“It would have been nice if both players had maybe shaken hands with each other.” On Kieron Dyer and Lee Bowyer fighting
“Titus Brambell had a very good game, which will silence all the boo-boys, and put them in the drink, and we can get on with our lives.” On Titus Bramble and the the Newcastle boo boys.
“Players never know why they are taken off or substituted – until they become managers.” On substitutions.
“Maybe not goodbye, but farewell.”
Roger Daltrey is not the only one guilty of chirping “Who are you? Who, who, who, who?. Oh no sports fan, HeavenSports has also been actively asking the profound question. Unlike Daltrey, the answer comes in the shape of our Which Premier League football team are YOU? survey!
As a manager, you always have a gun to your head. It’s a question of whether there is a bullet in the barrel.
