Top 10 US Open observations

Serena 'Stroppy dummy-spitter' Williams

Serena 'Stroppy dummy-spitter' Williams

The US Open maybe over for another 12 months, but just what have we learnt from this year’s tournament? Heaven Sports casts its tennis eye over the last fortnight and a bit to reveal the highs and lows of this year’s event.

1. Fairytale endings in competitive sport can happen! Kim Clijsters beats Caroline Wozniacki in straight sets to win the US Open, just her third tournament back after a 2½ year break.

2. Roger Federer is human. After 40 consecutive wins at Flushing Meadows the ‘Fed Express’ finally fails to, urm… deliver, losing to Juan Martin Del Potro in the final of the men’s singles.

3. John McEnroe has well and truly mellowed in his old age. The tennis legend entertained the crowds with Novak Djokovic to prove that he does have a sense of humour. Watch the incident here!

4. Serena Williams is a foul mouthed spoilt brat. The stroppy dummy-spitter is alleged to have threatened to kill the diminutive judge who was umpiring her semi-final clash with Kim Clijsters.

5. We have a British Grand Slam winner! No, not Andy Murray, but 17-year-old Heather Watson winner of the girls junior event.

6. Expectation levels are going to get silly for Watson.

7. The Williams sisters are unbeatable at doubles. The pair smashed top seeds Cara Black and Liezel Huber 6-2 6-2 in the US Open final. It is the sibling’s third Grand Slam doubles title of 2009, having missed out at the French Open.

8. Roger Federer produced one of the greatest shots of all time in his semi-final clash against Novak Djokovic. Check out the ‘hot dog’ here!

9. Flushing Meadows has a new US hope in the shape of Melanie Oudin. The 17-year-old defeated a host of seeds, Elena Dementieva (4) Maria Sharapova (29), and Nadia Petrova (13), before crashing out in the quarter-fianls. Expect big things from her in the future!

10. What happened to Andy Murray? The British number went into the tournament with the hopes of a nation behind him only to stumble out in the fourth round to Marin Cilic. Chin up Muzza.
